Karuna is a community that supports people affected by one of life’s most important experiences - dying.
Karuna’s goal is to provide comfort and quality of life for people who are dying and their families, and relieve fear and suffering associated with loss. Our service is based on the values of the preciousness of life, respect, compassionate service, empowerment and universal responsibility.
‘Karuna’ is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘Compassion’.
Death, illness and loss are natural things, but most people find these times stressful and confusing. The fear of dying, separation from loved ones and dependent family members, the strain of caring, financial pressure, fear of the future, loneliness and insecurity are just some of the concerns people face.
Karuna Hospice Services is a registered charity and its funding is dependent on the generosity of the community. The home palliative care service is provided free to clients and many client families opt to make a donation. For each client and family it costs an average of $3000.
Queensland Health provides only half of these costs. The rest comes from the generous donations of the community.
